The variants of the 1854 & 1862 Jager Rifles sometimes get confusing, we hope the next few pages will simplify them. Thanks to John Hakes and Dave Hunter in Scotland for their research and help with these Jagers. These rifles were originally made in .54 caliber, but many were rebored to .58 caliber before they were sent to America. The only difference between the 1854 and the 1862 model Jagerstutzen is the change in 1862 to the Enfield shaped lock plate and all 1862’s were made with ramrods. Many of the 1854’s were updated to take ramrods so it is always best to look at the shape of the lock plate when trying to identify them.
These were a shorter version of the 1849 Kammerbusche. They were manufactured with a 28" tapered and flared octagon barrel with the muzzle turned down to accept the 26 1/2" long sword bayonet. The caliber was reduced down to .54 caliber. The sliding sight is adjustable to 1,000 paces. This rifle was originally made without a ramrod as the loading rod was carried in the bayonet scabbard, but there were two variations in the stock shown that were made in Austria for carrying the ramrod. Contrary to what many people believe, these variants were built before the American Civil War. These were the rifles that were used by the cadets at VMI to defend it during the Civil War. The North and South both used them. We are also offering the 26 1/2" sword bayonet.
