The new French carabine’s were all manufactured with 32 5/8" rifled barrels. The 1840 model had the separate breech as did the musket. Both models used the shouldered breech design by Delvigne. These rifles used a folding rear sight with openings for up to 550 meters.
In 1846, the French adopted the “tige” breech which was a stud projecting from the breech plug face to allow the ball to be rammed hard against it and swell it to bore size without crushing the powder. These were called Carabine a Tige. The 1853 model’s breech was widened as in the musket. When the new minie bullet was adopted in 1857, most of the tige breech guns had the breech plug projections removed. The 1859 model’s were produced just for the new bullet. The barrel length of the 1846, 1853 and 1859 rifles is 34 3/16" and had a .708 caliber. There is a Belgian version of this rifle that was made in .58 caliber.
