Ansbach-Bayreuth Jeager Rifle (715)
In 1776, three full companies of Ansbach Jeagers were sent to America and attached to the Hesse Cassel Jeager’s. The Jeager units gave a very good account of themselves in the American Revolution. The units served in most of the major battles. According to Moller, there were five companies of foot, and one company of mounted Jeagers. Thanks to Todd Gerding, we now have the rifle used by these Jeagers. This rifle is almost identical in styling to the Pistor Jeager with the exception of the lock and rear sight. The stock also has slightly more drop in it. The lock plate measures 5 1/4" x 1". The throw of the cock is 1 1/2".
Note:
We have dismantled a considerable amount of
weapons over the years and one thing that is very predominate on German and
Austrian Arms is they used very long breech plugs (threaded portion) up to 1
1/8" in length, but on the average around 7/8" long and the touchhole was set
1/4" to 3/8" behind the face. The plug always had a u-shaped notch cut from the
center of the face down to the touchhole actually giving it a patent breech
effect, and always keeping the touchhole blown free of fowling.
The second major difference we have noticed is the rifling twist is very fast
regardless of what caliber it is. Anywhere from 1/2 turn to 1 turn in the length
of the barrel. Which in about 33 rifles we have checked which translates from 1
turn in 28" to 1 turn in 46".
