1690's French Naval Musket (941)
Nice late 1690’s French Naval Musket 44 1/2”,
octagon to round barrel in .69 caliber. Early steel ramrod. This musket is a
bit fancier than most. Notice the stock is straighter than the Fusil
Ordinaire 1695’s, when the La Peid curved stock from Tulle started
appearing. Beautiful butt plate will also work on our series 680. This
musket was shown in the 1697-1702 book of Saint-Remy, Memoires d’Artillerie,
where he stated “Some muskets are better finished than others as certain
regiments are eager to have finer and more correct arms with proofed barrels
that are polished. The almost identical musket was also shown in the Spanish
drawings of the period. The Spanish used many early French Arms and you can
see a considerable amount of French influence in their own arms starting in
this period of time.
When the Edict of Nants was revoked in France in 1685 many of the protestant
craftsman including many of the best gun makers fled to England and Holland.
You can see much of their design and influence in the weaponry of these
countries starting at this time.
