In 1789, Virginia started their own small arms manufactory in Richmond, Virginia. This is the first pattern of the Virginia Muskets. It was produced from 1802 to 1809. It has a 44 3/4" long round barrel, in .69 caliber. George Moller states that the barrel lengths varied. For economy reasons 39" and 42" long barrels were also acceptable at the arsenal. The lock plate measures 6 1/2" x 1 1/4".
