These carbines were made from 1837 to 1840. They were made in .64 caliber smoothbore so the standard musket ball could be used. Early production carbines had the lower end of the trigger guard hinged for an implement box. This model also used a large eye bolt through the wrist for a sling ring. Barrels were 23" long and were fitted with the sliding ramrod type bayonet. They also had a bar braced across the bottom of the receiver at the breech block pivot hole to help keep from splitting the stocks from the recoil.
