Peter Gonter Contract Indian Trade Rifle (770)
This rifle is believed to be one of the rifles Peter Gonter made under the 1803 contract to the U.S. Indian Department. It has a 44" tapered and flared barrel in .54 caliber. We have cast the original engraving in the patch box. The lock plate is marked “Dreppard.” A very nice and historical piece. These rifles were contracted by the U.S. Government and used to pay part of the payments to the many different Indian tribes they signed treaties with. The lock plate measures 4 3/4" x 15/16". The throw of the cock is 1 3/8".
